How to Ask for Reviews and Referrals

And Get More Clients!

Yes, you’re a business owner.  You already know that referrals are one of the top ways to grow your business. But you may not have realized that you can dramatically increase the number of referrals by doing one thing. Just ask for the referral.

When you’re done with a job, are you leaving money on the table?

Every business out there hopes they get referrals and positive feedback, of course, but maybe you’re not putting yourself out there to ask directly.

Like so many other businesses, you became a home maintenance and repair Service Pro because you’re great at what you do. You may not necessarily be great at the sales and marketing end of it. You might just assume that clients will pass along good word of mouth about the job you’ve just performed, but that’s not always the case.

The client you just did the job for has their own life and concerns, and growing your business may not be high on the list. But if you’ve done great work, they’re most likely wanting to help you out. This is where getting over feeling shy about asking comes in. You just ask them to give your work a review on LOWO and refer your business to their family, friends, and neighbors.  Pretty novel, ain’t it?

Get Over Your Fear

Most people like to help other people (side note: especially if there is no real cost to them.).  With most projects, that final client meeting is a perfect time to ask for that positive referral. The worst thing that can happen is that the client says, "No” but that’s an opening when you can address “why”. For good work, we bet you’ll start to hear “Yes” more often.  And just remember you have the ability to review customers (because we appreciate that nobody wants to work for a bad “boss”)!

Make “asking” for a positive review and referral part of your project routine

At least until asking has become a habit for you and you are comfortable with asking, use a script.  Keep it simple and direct:

“It makes me happy that you’re pleased with the work. In my business, reviews and referrals are everything. I’d appreciate if you left me a positive review on LOWO and pass my name along. Do you know anyone else who could use my services?”

Make it easy for them to pass your name around

Point out they, and any of their referrals, can easily find when you’re available for work on LOWO.  You can also vary the script and be more direct to ask for names of people for the referral.

"I'm really glad that you're pleased with my work. I'm always looking for referrals and wonder if you know anyone else who might be interested in my services. I’m always broadcasting on LOWO when I’m available in your area, so that’s an easy way to find me."

Tips for Asking for Reviews and Referrals
  • Ask for reviews and referrals face-to-face
    • People will always be more likely to do something for someone else if the person is standing right in front of them. It's not only more respectful of your clients, but you’ll be more successful
  • Pick your timing
    • If at all possible, never ask for a referral when presenting a bill
  • Ask for a written review on LOWO and any other public-facing platform that serves your business
    • Don’t expect this on the spot, but do suggest that you’ll follow up in a couple of days for a review
  • Practice makes permanent!
    • You need to build your business - don’t let your shyness or any jitters get in the way
  • Mention how they can always find you on LOWO

And the Power it Provides!

A full profile indicates a few things to a potential customer that might not have crossed your mind: It shows them your attention to detail and ability to complete things in full. And that’s before they’ve even ordered your services! ​

​​Homeowners, Property Managers, and Builders want to see who they’re working with, and a photo of yourself goes a long way (in terms of a passive introduction) to creating that personal connection. Additionally if you have a logo for your business, upload it - shows that you’ve worked toward branding and marketing and that you are putting effort in your business.

Small indicators like this help a potential customer gain more understanding of who you are and what you are about.  Have insurance?  Include in your profile so that customers know you are serious about protecting their property. Have a professional license?  Let customers know as well - can help distinguish your business from those who don’t. 

Next you want to make sure you’ve indicated what services you provide so that people can actually send you a request. Without checking this box, people will be able to see you, but not order or contact you directly through LOWO.  We’ve seen it a few times - the best Service Pros out there aren’t able to snag those immediate leads because rather than the big button that says “order service” – it shows up blank and the job goes to the next guy available.

TIPS:
  • Be sure to upload a photo of yourself, and your company’s logo so that people know who you are.
  • Make sure you’ve indicated what services you provide
  • Make sure you provide any other information which will help set you apart from the competition!

Boost-Me, Baby!

Using LOWO’s powerful Boost feature

We’ve got your number: you’re in the fix-it industry for a reason—you love tools. Yah, us too. But unlike that impact driver, these tools help you gain clients, jobs and even great reviews.

In addition to LOWO’s not-so-secret weapon of letting you, Service Pros, Toggle On and Off so that Homeowners, Property Managers, Renters, and Builders know when you’re available to take on a new job, we’ve built in another powerful feature. This feature broadcasts out your availability out to nearby users in the form of a notification on their phones. We call it BOOST.

When to use Boost
LOWO’s Boost feature allows you to specify a radius from where you are and where you can drive to relatively quickly. Use Boost when you find yourself in a new area, or have additional time, like waiting out traffic. Boost is designed to help you get the attention of new clients in new areas.

Reach
There’s an easy slider to see how big the Boost is: geographically and the number of people reached. Just extend the Boost radius until you see the sweet-spot, pay through the Apple store and whoooosh!—your Boost is on its way through time and space to instantly broadcast out to nearby LOWO users.

Don’t forget to Toggle Off when it’s quittin’ time so that you don’t continue to get calls when you’re off duty.

Toggling On & Off within the LOWO app

Being in the service based industry means that you’re at the beck-and-call of your clients and their schedules. But what happens when you want to take control of your schedule and start to cluster clients and jobs together so that they make sense for YOU?

Do I have to use the "Always On" setting in iOS settings?  
No, but if you don't, then the app will show you in your last known location when you last used the app.  Don’t fret: You can Toggle On so that customers can see your general location and availability (and Toggle Off so that they can't).

Isn't LOWO always tracking my phone then?  
OK, yes, but we don’t do anything with the information.

So, LOWO doesn't sell my location information? 
That's correct.  Selling your location data violates our core values and is a major “no-no.”  We treat Service Pros and Homeowners, Property Managers, and Builders the way we want to be treated.

Work when you want, where you want with LOWO

The life of a service professional can mean hours on the road to an appointment in a nearby city only to be finished within minutes or only hand out an estimate. And while we’ve all come to know this as just part of “the job” there is a better way to play out the day. The LOWO app shows Homeowners, Property Managers, Renters, and Builders, in real-time, your approximate location, whether you’re available, and what your specialty is. So when you’re in an area far from home and waiting out traffic, rather than killing time and grabbing yet another snack, you can pick up a few more jobs on the spot.

Once you’ve signed up for a LOWO account through the app, you’ll Toggle On to let people know you’re available now. A phone notification will appear when someone has ordered your services for a job. If you accept the request, you’ll be contacted directly by the person requesting service and then you’re off to the races making a stressed out homeowner or property manager super happy in the process.
